From everyone's friend Corey Pronman, on why Casey was rated the #1 prospect:

Mittelstadt, the MVP of the World Juniors, stands out with his elite offensive abilities. There are very few players outside the NHL who can create offense like he can, and he often brings fans out of their seats. He skates well, has arguably the best set of hands outside the league and has great overall offensive instincts as a playmaker. Off the puck, he’s not the best. Despite having fine size, he isn’t going to be a high-end physical player and needs work defensively. However, he shields pucks fine and, given his size and elite skill package, it gives him the potential to be a star in the league. I have small reservations about his production at various levels relative to his age that raise a tiny alarm in my brain, but I’ve watched him so much and see a consistently high-end guy that I’m not too concerned especially given he was playing high school hockey a year ago.

Why would anyone on earth want that?

If someone outbids me here, I get to keep Mittelstadt. I'm good with that, too.

Why can’t he produce in college? Working on his D?

And who cares about Corey Pronman? He had Grigorenko ranked 2 before as well. Probably never played a day of hockey in his life, and people quote him like gospel.

It's almost as though you're more worried about the Racers getting Ovechkin than you are the Tycoons. Hmph.

If it makes a diff, I'll toss in Tim Heed.

This is an SCHL classic..the guy in the NHL at 18/19 gets bashed while the guy in the juniors or NCAA is pump ups.

Its not that cut and dry.

Did he make the team or did they need a body?

Did some dumb coach think he was ready when he was not?

He’s playing the least minutes night in and out of every Philly forward not named Jori Lehtera. It doesnt mean anything that he’s there.

Show me something. He could be getting Brule’d along.

I'm not bashing Nolan Patrick. I'm sure he'll be a fine player.

But values of players can and do change after the draft.

Victor Mete is in the NHL, do you give Tanner props for making such a great pick? Does that mean, because Mete made the NHL at 18/19 that he's inherently better than Heiskanen or Makar?

Would you rather have Laine (drafted 2nd) or Keller (drafted 7th)? You being you will probably say Keller - because you love him and you think he oozes talent. And he does. That doesn't mean everyone's going to agree with you. In that instance a whole bunch of people would prefer to have Laine who was drafted 2nd overall.

Go back a bit to the 14 draft. Would you rather have Sam Reinhart who went 2nd overall and played 9 games as a 19 year old, or William Nylander at 8th? Or Nikolaj Ehlers at 9th? Or Robbi Fabbri at 21st?

That's how it works. Things change. Guys are drafted where they're drafted. Some pan out, some don't. Take a look at your own guys and try not to play whateversuits. It's more complex than "This guy was drafted 2nd and played in the NHL right away so he *must* be better than the guy who was drafted 8th overall and went to the NCAA instead."

I am sure Nolan Patrick will be a great player. He's poised to be the Flyers' second line center for years to come here. I am sure Casey Mittelstadt will be a great player, too. He gets to play with Jack Eichel, potentially.

They can both be good, and someone can have a preference different than yours. Maybe you're right, maybe you're wrong, maybe both players will produce equally. That's the fun of this stuff. Using an educated guess to get it right.

I'm not even talking about NP or Middle..

Just in general, it's almost better to be cut, then make the squad and get a limited role for value in the SCHL.

I was reading to the bottom of this thread to post this exact thing.

Derek is obviously pumping up any offer that isn't coming from someone near him in the WG. Terrible smokescreening.

Trading him 7 guys? He'd never be able to protect all of them.

That is a concern.

I’m also not mentally ready to move Hedman. In fact, I’m building around that monster.

I appreciate the creative and interesting bid, and the caliber of the players ... but I’m not moving Hedman soon, and certainly not while this auction is going on.

Happy to include other guys.

Don't look at it as throwing out Hedman. Look at it as investing in younger players and future stars.

I don’t really - there’s some cool players there . I just wanna keep him for now.

I’ll think on him more seriously once I see my roster and protects and picks after dealing Ovy and a bunch of other vets.

I'd say a player needs to hit about 30 points in the NHL as a newly drafted player to get SCHL credit, otherwise the value falls.
