Step 1:
I will trade you a player for a pick just prior to the protection cut off.
Step 2:
After the protect date, (i.e. at 11am next Wednesday) you will put that player on the trade block....but I will limit the downside and I will offer up:
1) The pick you gave me in Step 1.
2) A late 4th this year, which will replace the 5th rounder you otherwise would have received but keeping 1 less keeper (ie. 13 keepers vs 14 keepers)
3) and I'll throw in my 4th rounder in 2022.
If you're a teams thinking about keeping 13 guys, let me know.
Do we really need to go through this to accomplish a pick for protect spot swap? C’mon. I haven’t seen something so complicated since I designed SP-1.
#letsendthecharade
This is just my trade block.
It really isn't complicated at all.
There’s way more work with this type of transaction than there would be if we were to just trade a spot for a pick. I’m just not getting why the effort to keep it this way.
The trade back for protection spot is a mess and complete gong show. Is Blake forgetting the history of discussions on this when we first started doing these?
Technically you have to shop it after protection too, yet this has been a bit lost in the past few years.
Just make it a simple tradable protect spot and call it a day. Easy peasy

It's not a gong show nor is it a mess. It' happens once or twice a year for a week. Why bother fixing something that does not require fixing?

Making it a tradeable asset would be good. More flexibility in trade talks.
I don’t really see a need for a rule here, if you make one of these deals there’s a risk.
You don’t actually have to go through with the backend portion. In fact, if you get a better offer you’re obligated to take it. That’s the risk. Or if the guy dies, retires or blows out his back for the season while trading and is now worthless.

And you've addressed none of the potential effects of that.....
We have two assets. Picks and players. Addng a 3rd after all these years will have a ripple effect.

Talking rules is pointless
Why?
There are unintended consequences of these various things that I don't think have been aired out. For what I consider little upside. Why take that risk? Unless you can show me how it would work. You'd also hae to reword the rules etc.

It’s still 2 assets.
The protection spot turns into a player anyways.
There’s no ripple effect because it all resets once protection deadline is triggered.
I am not saying it won't work, I am saying why bother bringing somethgign in for little upside. I didn't think dropping 4 players would turn into a clusterfuck back in the day, but it did.

How can we address the potential effects of them when you aren't saying what they are?

I don't know what they are....you haven't thought about them when proposing this idea.

I think he’s saying they’re unknown at this point. He hasn’t worked some Oceans 11 angle to break into the vault.
What he knows is this current way we know what we have.
The spirit of tidying up the process is so nominal in nature that it isn’t worth any potential unforeseen effects. That’s actually quite reasonable.
